YOU ARE INVITED TO SHARE A CREATIVE AND FUN DAY PAINTING ON SILK

With Marlene Page – Healing Circle Silks
For beginners or more experienced painters

Workshop 1- Monday 4th September

Techniques covered include wet on wet, watercolour, drawing with Gutta for design work and much more, salt effects. How to steam your own silk at home.
Different types of silk discussed and dyes, including steam set and heat set with iron.
If you have silk or paints of your own you would like to bring please do.

Workshop 2- Monday – 11th September.

Microwave for fabulous silks. This workshop will cover microwaving techniques including Shibori(a resist method)Mopping up and just having fun twisting around pvc pipe,knotting and clamping only the imagination limits the creativity. This is fun and quick results take home your own beautiful silk scarf or material.

Venue – Studio 2 The Old Royal George Community Arts Center, George Street, East Fremantle.
Time 10am-3pm
Cost of Workshop $70.00
Materials $20. This includes 3 pieces of silk, Dyes and Gutta.

Jill Bryant a painter whose scenes of Fremantle are selling well and John Akerman a portrait painter with an exhibition coming up later in the year. The vibrant colours and incredible patterns formed by the rock in some ancient cataclysm form abstract patterns which will be the basis of many paintings.

After a recent cruise through the Abrolhos Islands Denny Sanbrook painted this image of Guano Jetty on Pelsaert island.

During the Second World War guano was mined and exported from here after artificial fertilisers became in short supply.

Genesis Paints

A number of artists from the Old royal george visited the factory of Genesis Paints this week for a demonstration of a different approach to oil painting. One of the disadvantages of oils is their slow drying and the necessity of using such things as turpentine. These new paints are dried by a heat gun and can be dried in sections enabling the artist to control the process. They also use no toxic solvents and are ideal for people with allergies.
Each of the artists spent a couple of hours experimenting on a small canvas and it was interesting to see the different approaches. Some of them were converted immiediately whilst others , particularly those who go in for a large amount of texture and impasto were not quite so sure.
Certainly these paints will give some artists a different approach to their work and some at the George will convert to them.

The group from the Old Royal George spent a week over on the island taking two cottages at Fay's Bay for accommodation. Overlooking Geordie Bay they witnessed the weather pass through full gale to serene but cold sunny days. Each of the artists worked on sketching and photography, interspersed by serious intake of food and of course the occasional glass of wine. The upshot is that a number of paintings will be completed back in their studios over the next few months and will probably find their way into forthcoming exhibitions.
The storytelling each evening became increasingly more humerous and the combined lives of this group would read like a novel if put together properly.
This I think will be the first of a number of such trips in the future.
The highlight for me was the walk to West End on a day when the sea was tumultuous with waves crashing against the cliffs throwing their spray high in the air. It can easily be imagined how easily a ship could come to grief on this coast line.
The down side was a rather lacklustre performance of the group in a quiz night at Kingstown Barracks which demonstrated that nobody watched the Simpsons or All Saints!

Rottnest

Those attending are Marlene Page, Jane Kos, Mitzi and Gary Smith, Sandra and Peter Perry and Denny and Barry Sanbrook. They have accommodation in Fay's Bay. Photographs to follow next week

The Old Royal George Hotel

This wonderful old building situated in East
Fremantle Western Australia has been a focus of community activity for over 100
years. Originally built as a pub it has had several transformations, the most
recent into a centre for the arts.
It is home to a number of artists who have studios
in the building and also contribute on a regular basis to the gallery which
forms an integral part of the ambience of the place.
The artists run the OLD ROYAL GEORGE ARTISTS
FOUNDATION INC, a group dedicated to keeping the spirit of the arts community
alive and they run the gallery and workshop.
The building has recently changed ownership and is
now controlled by the National Trust who intend to eventually restore the
building back to its former glory. They are in consultation with ORGAF, the
local business community and local residents to gauge opinions on the best usage
for parts of the building. In general the National Trust are committed to
keeping the building as a place for the arts but do need to generate income to
cover recurrent costs.
